About

Therapy that makes room for both insight and change

People often come to therapy because something in life is no longer working the way it once did. You may be caught in overthinking, avoiding decisions you know you need to make, struggling with anxiety or depression, questioning a relationship or career, or simply recognizing that familiar ways of coping are keeping you stuck. I approach therapy with the belief that symptoms rarely exist in isolation. The ways we respond to uncertainty, relationships, responsibility, loss, conflict, and change are shaped by our experiences and by patterns that may have developed long before we became fully aware of them. Therapy creates an opportunity to understand those patterns more clearly and to decide which ones still serve you. My work is primarily existential and depth-oriented, drawing from psychodynamic and Jungian perspectives. This means we may explore questions of identity, meaning, responsibility, relationships, faith, values, past experiences, and the choices in front of you; not simply work toward making uncomfortable feelings disappear. At the same time, insight is most useful when it can affect how you live. I integrate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) when practical strategies can help you respond differently to rumination, avoidance, self-doubt, and uncertainty. Therapy with me is collaborative and thoughtful. I will listen carefully, but I will also ask questions, point out patterns, and invite you to consider perspectives that may be difficult to see from inside the problem. The goal is not for me to tell you what decisions to make, but to help you understand yourself and your situation well enough to make those decisions more deliberately. I am Samuel P. McDonnell, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida with an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Palo Alto University. I provide individual telehealth psychotherapy for adults throughout Florida. In Via Behavioral Health is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. Superbills are available for clients who wish to seek possible out-of-network reimbursement through their insurance plan. Coverage and reimbursement vary by plan and are not guaranteed. If you are considering therapy and wondering whether my approach would be a good fit, you are welcome to request a free 15-minute consultation. **Currently not accepting new clients.
